Post Malone “Psycho” Lyrics & Meaning

July 7, 2022 By Camila Leave a Comment

post malone psycho lyrics meaningPost Malone is somewhat of an enigma.

He mixes genres and styles and claims a wide variety of musicians as influences.

Whatever you think of him, he’s had a number of huge hits already, in what is still a fairly young career.

Some of those hits were deeply introspective songs.

Others were more of the stereotypical rap variety that talk about having money, cars, guns and women.

Psycho is one of those.

Is that all there is to it, or is there another level? A meaning beneath the meaning?

Keep reading for the complete lyrics to Post Malone’s Psycho, and a breakdown of their meaning.

Post Malone Psycho Lyrics And Meaning

Post Malone has become one of the essential figures of trap. The best proof is the success he achieved with Rockstar, a song many fell in love with and that achieved very good numbers.

It was #1 for 8 consecutive weeks on the list of best-selling songs in the United States and has already accumulated more than 1 billion global streams, counting all platforms.

Then came its successor Psycho, a song that continued the theme that made the song Rockstar famous – one of riches and fame. It was a collaboration with Ty Dolla $ign.

And yes, the song continues to move in that frivolity that Rockstar showed off. If then it was drugs, now we find cars, girls, and diamonds.

It is the second single from an album that gained much popularity all over the world, although it was delayed for quite a while. Even Post Malone said it:

“Hello guys, I know that many of you were waiting for a project today, but it won’t arrive for a while. I’m sorry to disappoint you but I need to make sure this album is perfect for you. I’m going to keep working hard and make the best fucking album of all time. I love you.”

The album finally came out and was called Beerbongs & Bentleys. Let’s take a look at the lyrics, before getting into the song’s meaning.

Post Malone Psycho Lyrics

[Chorus: Post Malone]
Damn, my AP goin’ psycho, lil’ mama bad like Michael
Can’t really trust nobody with all this jewelry on you
My roof look like a no-show, got diamonds by the boatload
Come with the Tony Romo for clowns and all the bozos
My AP goin’ psycho, lil’ mama bad like Michael
Can’t really trust nobody with all this jewelry on you
My roof look like a no-show, got diamonds by the boatload
Don’t act like you my friend when I’m rollin’ through my ends, though

[Verse 1: Post Malone]
You stuck in the friend zone, I tell that four-five the fifth, ayy
Hunnid bands inside my shorts, DeChino the shit, ayy
Try to stuff it all in, but it don’t even fit, ayy
Know that I been with the shits ever since a jit, ayy
I made my first million, I’m like, “Shit, this is it,” ayy
30 for a walkthrough, man, we had that bitch lit, ayy
Had so many bottles, gave ugly girl a sip
Out the window of the Benzo, we get seen in the rent’
And I’m like “Woah, man, my neck so goddamn cold”
Diamonds wet, my t-shirt soaked
I got homies, let it go, oh
My money thick, won’t ever fold
She said, “Can I have some to hold?”
And I can’t ever tell you no

[Chorus: Post Malone]
Damn, my AP goin’ psycho, lil’ mama bad like Michael
Can’t really trust nobody with all this jewelry on you
My roof look like a no-show, got diamonds by the boatload
Come with the Tony Romo for clowns and all the bozos
My AP goin’ psycho, lil’ mama bad like Michael
Can’t really trust nobody with all this jewelry on you
My roof look like a no-show, got diamonds by the boatload
Don’t act like you my friend when I’m rollin’ through my ends, though

[Verse 2: Ty Dolla $ign]
The AP goin’ psycho, my Rollie goin’ brazy
I’m hittin’ lil’ mama, she wanna have my babies
It’s fifty on the pinky, chain so stanky
You should see the whip, promise I can take yo’ bitch
Dolla ridin’ in an old school Chevy, it’s a drop top
Boolin’ with a thot-thot, she gon’ give me top-top
Just one switch, I can make the ass drop (Hey)
Ayy, take you to the smoke shop
We gon’ get high, ayy, we gon’ hit Rodeo
Dial up Valentino, we gon’ hit Pico
Take you where I’m from, take you to the slums
This ain’t happen overnight, no, these diamonds real bright
Saint Laurent jeans, still in my Vans though
All VVS’, put you in a necklace
Girl, you look beautiful tonight
Stars on the roof, they matching with the jewelry

[Chorus: Post Malone]
Damn, my AP goin’ psycho, lil’ mama bad like Michael
Can’t really trust nobody with all this jewelry on you
My roof look like a no-show, got diamonds by the boatload
Come with the Tony Romo for clowns and all the bozos
My AP goin’ psycho, lil’ mama bad like Michael
Can’t really trust nobody with all this jewelry on you
My roof look like a no-show, got diamonds by the boatload
Don’t act like you my friend when I’m rollin’ through my ends, though

Post Malone Psycho Meaning

The first chorus repeats three times in the song and goes:

Damn, my AP goin’ psycho, lil’ mama bad like Michael
Can’t really trust nobody with all this jewelry on you
My roof look like a no-show, got diamonds by the boatload
Come with the Tony Romo for clowns and all the bozos
My AP goin’ psycho, lil’ mama bad like Michael
Can’t really trust nobody with all this jewelry on you
My roof look like a no-show, got diamonds by the boatload
Don’t act like you my friend when I’m rollin’ through my ends, though

In the first line, the “AP” can mean two things. The first one is Audemars Piguet, a famous manufacturer of luxury watches from Switzerland. As the song tells about riches and jewelry, it makes complete sense, and Post is telling how great it looks.

But the second interpretation goes to video games, more precisely to Fallout, Post Malone’s favorite game. AP refers to action points and psycho refers to a chem from the game. Bad like Michael is saying that a woman looks fine, comparing her to Michael Jackson’s hit Bad.

The second line simply repeats the motive from many of his songs – when you’re famous, people want to be around you. You can’t trust anybody, they just want to be there.

The next line states how he’s driving a convertible car (no roof) that is full of diamonds.

Tony Romo was a quarterback who wore a #9 jersey, but Malone is not saying Tony Romo is with him. He is saying he has a 9 mm pistol that will protect him from all the “clowns and bozos”.

The final line once again repeats the sentiment of not trusting anybody, since people want to be around famous and rich people.

The first verse starts with Malone mentioning a girl a friend-zoned, who is a 4 out of 5 on his hotness scale. He’s not going to date her even though she looks nice, and does not want to elaborate why (he is pleading the fifth Amendment).

In the next three lines, Malone refers to an old photo of his wearing shorts. He was broke back then. A kid wearing silly stuff. This was close to before he became a millionaire, as the next lines continue.

His music career kicks off, he became a millionaire, and the clubs paid him 30,000 dollars just to show up. He became so rich that he even gave ugly girls champagne.

His neck is cold from all the jewelry, his shirt soaked with drinks. He’s got so much money that it can’t even be folded.

Between the two additional choruses, there is a second verse sung by Ty Dolla $ign that goes:

Like Malone, Ty Dolla $ign raps about being rich and getting the girls. He’s got a Rolex watch, a 50,000-dollar ring on his pinky, an old-school Chevy with hydraulics, and jewelry that looks like stars – all of which is enough for any lady to fall for him.

They can do whatever – go shopping at Valentino, smoke, whatever. Nothing came overnight though. He got it all from his musical career and hard work.

While Rockstar told about the hardships of being famous, Psycho tells the complete opposite story – it’s good to be famous and rich. You can do many things, especially get your way with women.

Post Malone Psycho Lyrics Meaning: Final Thoughts

It turns out there is no deeper meaning to the song Psycho. It simply talks about how great it is to be rich and famous but that there are also some problems that come along with it, namely that you can never really trust anyone.

Is it Malone’s deepest song? Far from it. Lyrically, it is nothing special. But you can say the same about many huge hits, and this song was a huge hit for a reason.

Besides, Post Malone has plenty of other songs that do have a much deeper meaning. And that is not something you can say about many (or even most) other hit makers.

Malone has notably struggled with sobriety. We have an article discussing the lyrics for How To Save A Life and their meaning. That hit by The Fray deals with the singer’s failure to help someone who was dealing with drugs and depression, very much like Malone himself has been (and perhaps still is).

Another related article we have deals with the lyrics and meaning of House Of The Rising Sun. That song talks about a notorious den of gambling, drinking, prostitution and whatever other vices you can think of. We could all see Mr. Malone frequenting this House Of The Rising Sun.

Finally, we have the Pumped Up Kicks lyrics meaning. This song has generated a lot of controversy, with critics feeling it glorifies school shootings. Malone himself is famously a big proponent of guns.
