Every Morning Lyrics And Meaning

Sugar Ray released Every Morning in 1999, as the lead single from their third studio album, 14:59. This album was a big departure for the band. They originally played a nu metal sound, but switched to making pop music once they realized it would be much more successful.

And they were right. Every Morning climbed all the way to number one the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart in the US. It also made to number three on the Billboard Hot 100.

As mentioned, the lyrics to the song are not nearly as upbeat as the melody makes it seem. We’ll take a look at those lyrics next, before getting deep into their meaning.

Every Morning Lyrics

Intro

Every mornin’ there’s a halo hangin’ from the corner
Of my girlfriend’s four-post bed
I know it’s not mine, but I’ll see if I can use it
For the weekend or a one-night stand

Verse 1

Couldn’t understand
How to work it out
Once again, as predicted, left my broken heart open
And you ripped it out
Something’s got me reelin’
Stopped me from believin’
Turn me around again
Said that we can do it
You know I wanna do it again

Chorus

(Sugar Ray say)
Oh
(Every mornin’)
Oh
(Every mornin’ when I wake up)
(Shut the door, baby, don’t say a word)
Oh
(She always rights the wrong, she always rights, she always rights)
(Shut the door, baby, shut the door, baby)

Verse 2

Every mornin’ there’s a heartache hangin’ from the corner
Of my girlfriend’s four-post bed
I know it’s not mine and I know she thinks she loves me
But I never can believe what she said

Pre-Chorus

Somethin’ so deceiving, when you stop believin’
Turn me around again
Said we couldn’t do it
You know I wanna do it again

Chorus

Oh
(Every mornin’)
Oh
(Every mornin’ when I wake up)
(Shut the door, baby, don’t say a word)
Oh
(Every mornin’)
(Shut the door, baby, shut the door, baby)

Bridge

She always rights the wrong
For me
Baby
She always rights the wrong
For me

Verse 3

Every mornin’ there’s a halo hangin’ from the corner
Of my girlfriend’s four-post bed
I know it’s not mine, but I’ll see if I can use it
For the weekend or a one-night stand

Chorus

(Shut the door baby, don’t say a word)
Every mornin’
Every mornin’ when I wake up
(Shut the door, baby, shut the door, baby)
Every mornin’
Every mornin’
(Turn me around again)
Every mornin’
(Shut the door, baby, don’t say a word)
Every mornin’
(Do it again)
Every mornin’ when I wake up
Every mornin’

Every Morning Meaning

In essence, the lyrics talk about bad relationships: deceit, lies, and sorrow. Not quite as happy as the melody makes it seem, right?

But, there is also another layer to the lyrics. If you dig a bit deeper, you quickly realize that the song is actually quite dirty.

Every mornin’ there’s a halo hangin’ from the corner
Of my girlfriend’s four-post bed
I know it’s not mine, but I’ll see if I can use it
For the weekend or a one-night stand

Halos are generally associated with angels. On a first read of the first verse, you might think that he woke up next to his girlfriend and saw a halo over her head, implying that she is an angel to him.

But as the text progresses, this halo is used as a symbol for a condom (circular shape) that’s hanging from the bed. It’s not his but it’s on his girlfriend’s bed, implying infidelity.

Couldn’t understand
How to work it out
Once again, as predicted, left my broken heart open
And you ripped it out
Something’s got me reelin’
Stopped me from believin’
Turn me around again
Said that we can do it
You know I wanna do it again

It is obvious from the next verse that things are not working out between them. On and on again, he has been hurt but keeps coming back. Naturally, he’s wondering why is he doing it. One of the answers is that she thinks they can keep going. The other answer lies in the chorus:

Oh, every mornin’,
Oh, every mornin’ when I wake up,
Shut the door, baby, don’t say a word,
Oh, she always rights the wrong, she always rights, she always rights,
Shut the door, baby, shut the door, baby

Obviously, the sex is amazing and he is always happy in the morning waking up next to her. But since she’s not faithful and lies a lot, the singer realizes that things are not working out. Even though she says she loves him, it is obvious that she’s cheating.

Every mornin’ there’s a heartache hangin’ from the corner
Of my girlfriend’s four-post bed
I know it’s not mine and I know she thinks she loves me
But I never can believe what she said

But, since the song is called Every Morning and the beginning of the song suggests a repetitive nature of this heartbreaking relationship, that is exactly what happens next.

Somethin’ so deceiving, when you stop believin’
Turn me around again
Said we couldn’t do it
You know I wanna do it again

He is enchanted with her, and she always makes things better. As long as they wake up together, he can get over the infidelity. And will it continue in the same manner? Yes, every morning.

The final stanza is the same as the first one, bringing the story full circle. Once again he finds condoms on the bed that are not his, and once again she was cheating.

Once again he is heartbroken, and once again she will lie. Still, she will make things right when the two of them are together. Ultimately, this masochistic relationship has no end. And apparently, that is perfectly fine.

Every Morning Lyrics Meaning: Final Thoughts

Sugar Ray did something completely different from their usual stuff with their first big hit Fly. The success of that song resulted in them changing their musical style to a much more pop-influenced sound for subsequent albums.

The first of those albums contained Every Morning, a song that sounds happy, but is actually about a dysfunctional relationship. The lyrics are a bit on the dirty side, too.

Another song that has dirty lyrics and is about a (very) dysfunctional relationship, check out our look at the Closer by Nine Inch Nails lyrics meaning.

Madonna (big surprise) also has a song about a sex act, although she has always maintained it is simply about a girl who loves God. See our analysis of the Like a Prayer lyrics meaning here.

Finally, we have a list of songs about being selfish that also applies here. The female in this relationship does seem to have a bit ofselfishness in her. While it is not completely her fault, she should probably just end this relationship, instead of stringing the gu along. It’s clear he’s to weak to do it.
