Silent Lucidity is a power ballad released by American band Queensrÿche in 1990 and featured on their album Empire. The song was written by the band’s lead guitarist, Chris DeGarmo and produced by Peter Collins.
The track gained instant recognition. It reached number one on the Billboard Album Rock Tracks Chart and peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100.
The song wasn’t just receiving recognition in 1990 but also a few years later as well. In 1992, it was nominated for Grammy awards for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Vocal Performance for a Duet or Group.

The band was popular across the world, particularly in the UK, but Silent Lucidity was their only track to get into the Top 100 in America.
Silent Lucidity Lyrics
Intro
Hush now, don’t you cry
Wipe away the teardrop from your eye
You’re lying safe in bed
It was all a bad dream spinning (Spinning)
In your head (Spinning, spinning, spinning)
Your mind tricked you to feel the pain
Of someone close to you leaving the game of life
So here it is, another chance
Wide awake, you face the day
Your dream is over
Or has it just begun?
Verse 1
There’s a place I like to hide
A doorway that I run through in the night
Relax child, you were there
But only didn’t realize and you were scared
It’s a place where you will learn
To face your fears, retrace the years
And ride the whims of your mind
Commanding in another world
Suddenly, you hear and see
This magic new dimension
Chorus
I will be watching over you
I am gonna help you see it through
I will protect you in the night
I am smiling next to you in silent lucidity
Bridge
Visualize your dream
Record it in the present tense
Put it into a permanent form
If you persist in your efforts
You can achieve dream control
(Help me) Dream control
How are we feeling today, better?
Dream control (Help me)
Dream control (Help me)
Dream control (Help me)
Dream control (Help me)
Verse 2
If you open your mind for me
You won’t rely on open eyes to see
The walls you built within come tumbling down
And a new world will begin
Living twice at once, you learn
You’re safe from pain in the dream domain
A soul set free to fly
A round trip journey in your head, master of illusion
Can you realize your dream’s alive?
You can be the guide, but
Chorus
I will be watching over you
I am gonna help you see it through
I will protect you in the night
I am smiling next to you
Silent Lucidity Meaning
The meaning behind Silent Lucidity has been interpreted in different ways, but it is clear that the song is written around lucid dreaming and the power of our minds.
Lucid dreaming isn’t something everyone has experienced. I haven’t. But I always wanted to. It seems like an enjoyable experience to be in control of what you dream about.
DeGarmo got the idea for the song after reading the book Creative Dreaming, which details how to tap into your conscious mind.
The lyrics of Lucid Dreaming are written in a way that guides us through lucid dreaming and gives us a sense of comfort, while also encouraging us to explore our dream.
DeGarmo started the song with a comforting whisper, maybe as a way to tell the dreamer that they aren’t alone. This then turns into reassurance, when a nightmare comes and soon becomes a narrative of self growth and liberation, which can only occur when a person has mastered the skill of lucid dreaming.
The song offers comforting words, with lyrics like, “Hush now, don’t you cry,” and “You’re safe from the pain in the dream domain.”
These comforting words would help a lucid dreamer, if they are having a nightmare, because it gives them the encouragement to push through. The majority of Lucid Dreaming can be seen as a comforting guide for when a person enters their subconscious.
Because Lucid Dreaming is about dreams, it can also be seen as a philosophical song. It explores themes such as dreams and the subconscious.
The meaning of the song is about inviting us listeners to command our dreams and enter a new lucid dimension in the realms of our subconscious minds. It’s a method that will help us navigate and understand our dreams. Having control over this is a great way to overcome fears and desires.
Speaking with Kerrang! magazine back in 1990, DeGarmo confirmed: “Silent Lucidity is probably one of the most genuinely out there things we’ve ever done. It’s about what they call lucid dreaming. Or dream-control. Basically, just opening up the doors to your subconscious mind, and learning how to master your dreams. Actually, be able to steer and control them.”
Silent Lucidity Lyrics Meaning: Final Thoughts
Even if you don’t know anything about lucid dreaming, or simply don’t care about it, Silent Lucidity is a great song. But it becomes even better if the Silent Lucidity lyrics meaning appeals to you, too.
And it definitely appealed to me, since I am fascinated by the idea of being able to control my dreams. Unfortunately, the somewhat simplistic instructions in the lyrics did not help me develop the ability to lucid dream.
Another great song with a mystical theme is Van Morrison’s Into The Mystic (it’s right in the title). Check out our article analysing the Into The Mystic lyrics meaning.
